Every December, EPM’s crews turn the river and half the city into one of Latin America’s great light displays — and the accommodation market runs hot from Velitas to mid-January. Plan accordingly.
The Alumbrados are designed and built each year by EPM, the city’s public utility, with a new theme annually — millions of bulbs shaped into tunnels, figures and riverside panoramas that draw visitors from across Colombia. The season opens around the Día de las Velitas (the night of Dec 7, when families line streets and balconies with candles — arguably the most magical single night to be in the country) and runs past New Year into January. Paisas treat December as one long celebration: novenas, natilla and buñuelos, family returns — which is exactly why apartments fill.
Comfortable December base: walkable evenings, easy Metro to the riverfront displays, and calmer pricing than Poblado’s holiday peak.

The season runs from early December (around Día de las Velitas, Dec 7) through mid-January, with the switch-on date announced by EPM each year. Early January is the quiet-viewing sweet spot — lights up, crowds down.
The riverfront — Parques del Río — is the traditional centerpiece, with major displays and light tunnels along the Medellín River, plus decorated plazas across the city and neighboring municipalities. Viewing is free and best after 6:30pm.
Four to eight weeks ahead. Christmas–New Year week and the Velitas weekend book earliest; a stay that starts in late November and runs into December catches pre-peak pricing on the same lights.
The night of December 7–8, when Colombian families light rows of candles on sidewalks and balconies to open the Christmas season — the country’s most atmospheric night. Sabaneta and Envigado’s plazas do it beautifully at neighborhood scale.
It is the most festive — and the most crowded and priced-up. Weather is fine (December opens the drier season). If festivity is the point, yes without hesitation; if you want the calm city, come in February.
