Lima traffic ranks among the world's worst — the answer is to not need it. The coastal districts chain together by the malecón and the Costa Verde road; apps (Uber, Cabify, DiDi, inDrive) are cheap (Miraflores→Barranco 8–14 PEN / $2–4) and the Metropolitano BRT (~3.2 PEN) covers the north–south spine. There's no useful metro for the coastal core yet. Rule: work, gym, groceries and social life inside one district; treat cross-city trips as day expeditions.
Lima's eating has rules that unlock it. Ceviche is lunch, never dinner — cevicherías buy fish at dawn and many close by 5 pm; a "cevichería" open at 9 pm is for tourists. The menú del día (12–20 PEN) is how the city eats Monday–Friday: soup or entrada, a fondo, a drink — find the chalkboard. Chifas (Peruvian-Chinese, a 170-year-old fusion) and pollerías (a quarter rotisserie chicken with fries, ~15–22 PEN) are the weeknight backbone. Book the world-list rooms (Central, Maido, Kjolle, Mérito) 1–2 months out — and know the mercado stalls two blocks away will also change your life for a fiftieth of the price.

Day 1: SIM at any Claro/Entel kiosk or corner agente (passport, 30–50 PEN for 20+ GB). Withdraw soles at BCP/Interbank/BBVA branch ATMs — decline dynamic conversion; expect a 12–20 PEN foreign-card fee, so withdraw larger sums less often. Install Uber, Cabify, DiDi and inDrive (compare — prices diverge 30% on the same route), plus Rappi.
Day 2: walk your stretch of the malecón to calibrate distances — Miraflores to Barranco along the cliff is 40 minutes of the best urban walking on the continent. Find your mercado (Surquillo №1 if you're near Miraflores) and your caserito — the stall-holder you'll return to; loyalty gets you the good avocados.
Day 3: if staying June–October, buy the space heater and dehumidifier NOW (Sodimac/Falabella, 90–250 PEN each) — by the first grey week they sell out of the good ones. Locate an Inkafarma/Mifarma and register your building's water-delivery rhythm if it uses bidones.

1. Phone away on the street — the snatch-from-hand is Lima's signature crime; step into a doorway to check maps. 2. App-taxis only after dark; never street-hail, anywhere. 3. The malecón is safe dawn to late evening — it's the city's best gym. 4. Card in sight at restaurants; the POS comes to you. 5. In taxis and combis keep bags on the floor between your feet, not on your lap by the window.

The trade-offs are traffic (plan life within your district) and the grey, damp June–October garúa season.
From roughly June to October, coastal Lima sits under an unbroken grey marine layer: 14–18°C, drizzle-mist, no real rain, no sun for weeks. Buildings have no heating, so it feels colder indoors than out. If sunshine matters to you, book December–April; if you don't mind sweater weather, winter rents run 10–15% softer.
Entry is granted for up to 183 days per year, at the immigration officer's discretion — 90 days is a common initial stamp. Peru also introduced a digital-nomad visa category recently; requirements are still settling, so verify current rules with a Peruvian consulate before planning around it.
The monthly-stay districts — Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro, San Borja — are heavily policed (serenazgo) and comparable to any large city's good areas. The real risks are phone-snatching on the street and hailing unregistered taxis: use apps (Uber, Cabify, DiDi) after dark, everywhere.
Almost none have either — Lima never freezes and rarely exceeds 30°C. In winter (garúa) a small space heater and a dehumidifier matter more than any amenity list admits; ask your host what's provided.
