Carnival 2026 begins — the world's second largest carnival

Barranquilla sits at sea level on Colombia's Caribbean coast, very close to the equator. The result: it's warm every single month of the year. There is no cold season, no need for a jacket, and no month where you'd describe the weather as anything other than tropical. What changes between months is rainfall and humidity — and those variations matter quite a bit for your experience.

Dry Season: December – April (Best Time to Visit)

This is when Barranquilla is at its best. Lower rainfall, lower humidity, and the Caribbean trade winds keep temperatures comfortable despite the heat. January and February have a distinctive pleasant breeze that makes outdoor life genuinely enjoyable.

February is also Carnival month — the city's annual UNESCO-recognized celebration brings 2 million people to the streets. If you want to experience Carnival, you must be here in late February.

  • Best for beaches: Puerto Colombia and Playa Salguero are at their best Jan–April
  • Best for outdoor activities: Morning and evening walks, outdoor dining, market visits
  • Best for arriving: December and January have the most comfortable first-time experience

Rainy Season: May – November (Still Livable)

The rainy season does not mean constant rain. It means predictable afternoon thunderstorms — typically 1–2 hours of heavy rain in the afternoon or evening, followed by clearing. Mornings are often sunny. Life continues normally; you just plan around the rain.

What the rainy season means practically:

  • Morning and lunchtime outdoor activities are generally fine
  • Beach trips are less enjoyable — rougher water, occasional jellyfish, higher chance of getting rained out
  • Humidity is noticeably higher — you'll be more grateful for AC
  • September–October are the most intense months — occasional street flooding during very heavy rains
  • The city continues functioning normally — this is not monsoon season

What to Pack for Barranquilla

The answer is refreshingly simple regardless of time of year:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing only. Linen, cotton, moisture-wicking fabrics. No wool, no fleece, no heavy materials.
  • A light cardigan or layer for heavy AC. Colombian indoor spaces (restaurants, offices, malls) often blast the AC. One light layer for indoors is useful.
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen. The Caribbean sun at this latitude is intense. Non-negotiable.
  • Comfortable walking sandals. Flip flops for casual, proper sandals for more active days.
  • A light rain jacket or umbrella (rainy season only): for May–November, a compact umbrella or packable rain shell is worth having.
  • Nothing warm. Absolutely nothing. Not even for early mornings. You will never use it.

The AC Reality

🌡️ Barranquilla is genuinely hot. 30–34°C daily with humidity in the rainy season means you will spend significant time indoors with AC. This is normal — locals do the same. Apartments, offices, restaurants, and malls are all heavily air-conditioned. This is why all-inclusive apartments with unlimited AC (like ours) are far more livable than places with electricity bills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Barranquilla?
December through April is the dry season — the best conditions for outdoor activities and beach trips. January and March are the sweet spots: fully dry, past the New Year rush, before Easter crowds. February is Carnival season — extraordinary if you want the cultural experience, but accommodation must be booked months in advance.
Does Barranquilla ever get cold?
Never. Barranquilla is at sea level on the Caribbean coast. The coolest months (December-January) still average 27°C/80°F. You will not need warm clothes at any time of year. The main temperature variation is between outdoor heat (30-34°C) and indoor AC (often 20-22°C in restaurants and offices).
Is Barranquilla hotter than Medellín or Bogotá?
Significantly. Bogotá sits at 2,600m altitude — it has a spring-like climate year-round (14-19°C). Medellín is the famous "city of eternal spring" at 1,500m (20-25°C). Barranquilla at sea level runs 27-34°C. If you are sensitive to heat, this matters a lot. If you love warm weather, Barranquilla is paradise. Most people adapt within 1-2 weeks.
Can I visit Barranquilla during rainy season?
Absolutely. The rainy season (May-November) doesn't make Barranquilla unlivable — it means predictable afternoon thunderstorms and higher humidity. Mornings are typically sunny. Accommodation is cheaper during rainy season, the city is less crowded, and if you're working remotely from an air-conditioned apartment, the weather outside barely affects you. The main sacrifice is beach trips, which are less reliable.
