Want the classic Montevideo month? Pocitos, three blocks from the rambla, done. Six months on a budget? Cordón, and spend the savings on parrilla. Sunset runs and park mornings? Parque Rodó. Kids and a garden? Carrasco. Beach town inside the city? Malvín. Architecture and port-market lunches? Ciudad Vieja, renovated block only. Undecided? Pocitos is the default for good reason — you'll upgrade your specificity next stay.
The heating question — ask it first: Montevideo's housing runs under-heated for its 6–15°C winters; confirm split frío-calor units or gas heating in every main room, not a lone electric radiator. The facing: north-facing units catch the winter sun (Southern Hemisphere!); river-facing west catches the pamperos — glorious in summer, knife-like in July. The building basics: is there a portero (doorman — common in Pocitos towers, a real security and package amenity), and what floor? Upper floors trade elevator dependence for light and river views.
Pocitos — the default for good reason: beach-adjacent, walkable, café-dense, safe, with the rambla as your front porch. Punta Carretas adds polish next door; Cordón and Parque Rodó take the younger, cheaper, more porteño-flavored crowd.
Cordón: central, well-connected, full of student and creative energy, at $450–750 for a furnished 1BR — 30–40% under Pocitos. Malvín and Buceo give beach life at a discount if you accept a longer ride to the center.
The renovated blocks are charming by day — pedestrian streets, the port market, museums. But it empties dramatically on nights and weekends, and the quiet edges feel it. Great for a character-first stay if you choose the exact block; wrong as a default.
The one with real heating. Montevideo's June–August (6–15°C, humid, windy off the river) exposes the city's under-heated housing stock. North-facing units with split A/C-heat units or gas heating beat charming-but-cold every time — it's a unit question more than a barrio question.
