Downtown Medellín is worth your daytime — Plaza Botero, the Museo de Antioquia, the palpitating commercial streets. It is not where to base yourself: it empties and gets sketchy after dark, and the accommodation stock there is cheap for a reason. El Poblado — specifically the Provenza side rather than directly on Parque Lleras. It is the easiest landing: walkable restaurants, coworking, English commonly spoken. Returning visitors very often switch to Laureles for value and calm.
Poblado for a short social trip and maximum convenience; Laureles for a longer stay, flat walking, and roughly 20–30% lower prices. Neither is wrong — they are different trips.
We advise against basing yourself in El Centro (downtown) — excellent by day, uncomfortable and higher-risk after dark. Be equally wary of listings priced far below market in areas you have not heard of.
Laureles, Envigado’s center and Sabaneta’s core: genuinely walkable and flat. El Poblado: walkable but steep. Between neighborhoods, use the Metro — clean, safe and cheap — or app-hailed rides.
José María Córdova (MDE) sits outside the valley — plan 40–60 minutes by taxi to Poblado or Laureles depending on traffic, longer at peak hours.
