For about ten days each August, Medellín throws Colombia’s great flower festival — and its accommodation market flips. Here is what happens, where to base, and when to lock your apartment.
The Feria has run since 1957 and centers on the silleteros — flower farmers from Santa Elena, the hills above the city, who carry elaborate flower arrangements on wooden racks on their backs, as their ancestors carried goods (and people) over the mountains. The closing-day Desfile de Silleteros is the emotional core; around it the city stacks a vintage car parade, horse events, orchid and bird exhibitions at the Jardín Botánico, free concerts, and neighborhood festivals. It is Medellín’s proudest week — paisas travel home for it.
Close to the Estadio-area event venues and the parade routes’ west side, flat for the amount of walking you will do, and calmer for sleep between event days.
